Q: My son, a senior in high school, has been playing mandolin for about 5 years and enjoys playing a wide variety of music including jazz, new grass, and classical. As he anticipates going off to college he would like to attend a school where he could advance his skills on the mandolin. do you know what colleges could provide a focus on this instrument? Also, he would like to attend several mandolin camps this summer. Could you recommend several camps that would help him improve his skills?
Thanks, S.
A: Hi S., and welcome to mando-world to your son! There are not too many colleges in the US that offer mandolin in the curriculum. Berklee School of Music recently added mandolin as a primary instrument. New England Conservatory doesn’t offer it, but the head of the guitar program plays and teaches when requested. Also our guitar instructor at Roger Williams University can play and teach mandolin, although, again, it isn’t listed. I suggest your son inquire directly to the schools he visits to see what is possible.
I am running a camp in July in Lubec, Maine and would love to see your son there. You can find most mandolin camps listed on the webpage of Mandolin Cafe. Good luck!
