Enigmatica is a Boston-based mandolin septet directed by Marilynn Mair. One part chamber orchestra, and one part plucked-string double-quartet, Enigmatica performs music of the Baroque, Brazil, and offbeat contemporary works. The group includes instruments from the mandolin family — mandolin, mandola, and mandocello — and on occasion may add percussion, voice, and classical guitar. Their repertoire includes Baroque music by Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, and Purcell; Brazilian music, including works of Villa-Lobos, Jacob do Bandolim, and Pixinguinha; music by 20th-century composers like Stravinsky and Shostakovich, and contemporary American composers, including Tim Ware, Pamela Marshall, Will Ayton, Jan Jarvlepp, and John Goodin. Enigmatica has presented its unique blend of chamber music in concert series throughout New England, including performances at the New England Conservatory, Blithewold Mansion, the Providence Athenaeum, Roger Williams University, and Providence's celebrated WaterFire. In November, 2004, the group were featured artists at the annual convention of the Classical Mandolin Society of America in Philadelphia. Notable performances of 2005 include the annual convention of the Fretted Instrument Guild of America (Providence, Rhode Island), the Summer Music Festival (Pomfret, Connecticut), and the Cape Cod Festival of Mandolins (Sandwich, Massachusetts). The group has for many years been featured in the annual concert series at the American Mandolin and Guitar Summer School. Original compositions for mandolin ensemble are rare, but Enigmatica has been proud to present new works written for the ensemble by Pam Marshall, John Goodin, and Adam Larrabee. Adam has created many of the unique 7-part arrangements in the group's repertoire. Enigmatica released its highly acclaimed self-titled debut CD in June, 2004. The group also appears on “Nadando em Luz / Swimming in Light — A Century of Brazilian Mandolin,” and “New England Yuletide.” Group members perform widely with other plucked string ensembles, most notably, The American Mandolin & Guitar Orchestra.
